The 5083 H116 aluminum plate is a widely used structural plate for marine engineering—certified by major classification societies—within the high-magnesium anti-corrosion aluminum alloy family. Thanks to its excellent resistance to seawater corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, combined with moderate structural strength, it has become a preferred material in global shipbuilding, container manufacturing, and offshore platform component production. When selecting materials, buyers often confuse the H116 and H321 tempers; however, they differ in processing and performance characteristics.

In terms of standard processing, the H116 temper is produced in strict accordance with ASTM B209 and the specifications of major maritime classification societies. After being cold-rolled to the required thickness, the 5083 aluminum plates undergo a specialized stabilization treatment to ensure uniform and stable resistance to seawater stress corrosion, with performance deviations within a single batch and sheet size controlled to under 5%. This temper is specifically designed for highly corrosive environments, such as marine atmospheres and wave splash zones; the plates can withstand long-term exposure to high-salinity salt spray without the risk of intergranular corrosion or stress corrosion cracking.
Regarding core performance parameters, the magnesium content of the 5083 aluminum alloy is strictly controlled between 4.0% and 4.9%, with 0.4%–1.0% manganese added for grain refinement. For 5083 aluminum plates in the H116 temper (commonly 3mm–50mm thick), mechanical properties fully meet marine structural requirements: tensile strength remains stable at 310–360 MPa, proof stress (yield strength) is ≥215 MPa, elongation after fracture is ≥12%, and Brinell hardness ranges from 90 to 105 HB. In terms of key corrosion resistance and processing metrics, the plates withstand over 3,000 hours of neutral salt spray testing without corrosion, retain ≥90% of welded joint strength, and exhibit no significant drop in impact toughness at -80°C. Dimensional precision is tightly controlled: thickness tolerances are ±0.15 mm for 3–12 mm thin plates and ±0.25 mm for 12–50 mm thick plates, with flatness ≤0.5 mm/m, ensuring suitability for the precision requirements of cutting, welding, and assembly in modular shipbuilding.
Based on years of experience supplying marine-grade aluminum plate, we have observed that many non-specialized suppliers pass off standard 5083-H32 aluminum plates as H116 temper material. Lacking the necessary specialized stabilization treatment for corrosion resistance, components supplied by them often develop stress corrosion cracks near weld seams after just one or two years of marine service, resulting in maintenance costs that far exceed the initial material price difference. Our 5083 H116 aluminum plates undergo rigorous stress corrosion testing, with zero cracking observed in intergranular corrosion samples across batches. We have consistently supplied over 30 global shipbuilding and container manufacturing clients, demonstrating stable performance consistency in large-scale applications.
Currently, 5083-H116 aluminum plate is widely used in applications such as ship hull side plating, superstructure bulkheads, shipping container end and side panels, offshore platform splash-zone structures, coastal industrial facility cladding, and refrigerated hold bulkheads for reefer vessels. As a professional manufacturer, we offer 5083 H116 aluminum plates in thicknesses ranging from 3mm to 100mm. We provide certifications from major classification societies (such as ABS, LR, CCS, and DNV) alongside third-party inspection reports. We also offer customized processing services—including cut-to-length and edge milling—and supply comprehensive export documentation, ensuring a compliant and reliable supply of marine-grade aluminum to offshore engineering clients worldwide.
